Verizon Wireless sues alleged information thieves
November 09, 2005
Verizon Wireless filed suit in Hillsborough County, Fla., accusing Global Information Group Inc. of making thousands of attempts to gather confidential information without authorization and using fraudulent schemes to do so, including impersonating Verizon employees and posing as customers.
On November 2, the court issued an immediate temporary restraining order, prohibiting the defendants from any further attempts to obtain confidential information from Verizon Wireless, any further contact with customer service centers, or providing any confidential customer information to third parties. Verizon Wireless also obtained an order from the court entitling it to seize any information the defendants may have gathered.
"This is not a big breach," said Tom Pica, a Verizon Wireless spokesman. "There were several thousand calls from these companies attempting to get data, and occasionally they succeeded. We discovered the pattern and acted quickly."
A joint venture between Verizon Communications and Vodafone, Verizon Wireless has 49 million voice and data customers.
